Free phone safety & scam awareness sessions for Adelaide groups
Jordan & Teagan run free, plain-English sessions for Probus clubs, community groups, retirement villages, workplaces and schools across Adelaide — how to spot phone scams, use banking apps safely, back up photos, and get more out of a smartphone. No sales pitch, no product demos, no sign-up sheet.

The scams we see most in Adelaide
These are the ones that come up in almost every session — and the tell that gives each of them away.
Fake myGov or ATO message
A text or email saying you're owed a refund, with a link. myGov and the ATO never send links asking you to log in or enter bank details. Always open the myGov app yourself instead of tapping the link.
Australia Post redelivery scam
"Your parcel could not be delivered, pay a small fee." The fee is tiny on purpose so you don't think twice — it's really about capturing your card details. Track parcels only in the official AusPost app.
"Hi Mum" / family impersonation
A message from an unknown number claiming to be your child who has lost their phone and needs money urgently. The tell is always urgency plus a new number. Ring the number you already have saved before you do anything.
Bank impersonation call
Caller ID can be faked, so it can genuinely look like your bank. A real bank will never ask you to move money to a "safe account", read out a one-time code, or install software. Hang up and call the number on your card.
Remote-access "tech support"
Someone claims your device is infected and asks you to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or similar. Installing it hands over full control. No legitimate company will cold-call about a virus on your phone.
Marketplace and second-hand phone scams
Overpayment, "courier" requests, and devices locked to someone else's Apple or Google account. Always check a used phone is signed out of iCloud before money changes hands — we can check IMEI status for anyone free.
Not sure about a message you've received? Call us on 0426 776 002 and read it to us — we'll tell you straight away, free, whether it's real.
What we cover
Spotting scams
Real examples of fake bank, Australia Post, myGov and 'Hi Mum' messages — and the tells that give them away.
Safe banking on a phone
How banking apps actually verify you, what a bank will never ask, and what to do if you've tapped a bad link.
Photos and backups
Making sure years of photos survive a lost or broken phone, without paying for storage you don't need.
Making a phone easier to use
Text size, contrast, hearing-aid pairing, emergency contacts and medical ID.
When a phone is worth repairing
Straight talk on repair versus replace, and how to avoid being upsold.
Open question time
The most useful part — everyone brings their own phone and their own question.
What a session looks like
A typical 45-minute session. We'll happily shorten or stretch it to fit your agenda.
- 0–5 minQuick intro: who we are, why we do this, and a promise that nothing is for sale.
- 5–20 minThe scams doing the rounds in Adelaide right now, with real screenshots on the projector or passed around on our phones.
- 20–30 minThe four settings we'd change on every phone in the room — screen lock, backups, two-factor, and text size or contrast.
- 30–40 minRepair versus replace: how to tell if a phone is worth fixing, and how to avoid being upsold anywhere.
- 40 min+Open questions, and hands-on help for anyone who wants a setting changed or a suspicious message checked.
Who we run them for
- Probus and Rotary clubs
- Retirement villages and over-55s communities
- Church and community groups
- Public libraries and neighbourhood centres
- Neighbourhood Watch groups
- School parent and staff evenings
- Workplaces and small-business teams
- Carer and support groups
Group size from 10 to 100+, anywhere across Adelaide metro. All we need is a room and somewhere to plug in if you have a screen.
Why we do it
After 15 years of repairing phones we've had far too many conversations that start with "I clicked a link and now my account is empty." Forty-five minutes in a room full of people prevents a lot of that. It also means when someone in the room does crack a screen, they already know who to call.
More about us and how we got here on our about page.
Official places to check and report
We point every group to these rather than asking anyone to take our word for it.
